Whirled views

When we are asking what the gospel is, we are asking an ultimate question.

  • We are not simply dealing with hobbyhorses, hermeneutics, or even history. We're making assumptions and assertions on the worldview level. In other words, we're making a case for a story that overarches all the other stories in reality. We're trying to make sense of our world by viewing it from a certain vantage point.

Any religious or metaphysical worldview worthy of the name will at least try to answer three basic questions:

  • What is the nature of the religious ultimate? (Who is God, or of what does ultimate spiritual existence consist?)
  • What is the nature of the human predicament (What's wrong with us? Why aren't we as good as we feel like we ought to be?)
  • What is the solution to that predicament (What are we to do about not being as good as we ought to be?)
