What Change is Needed?

The One-eighty

Culture says the most needed change is to become more open-minded.

  • Perhaps the most well received idea of conversion today is that of rejecting a narrowly Judeo-Christian ethic in favor of a broad acceptance of many religious traditions.
  • One popular trend of pluralism has been to synthetically formulate an individualized religion by combining various strands of thought and experience from multiple religions in order to suite our personal tastes and felt needs. Such a broadening change is regarded as the pinnacle of religious freedom and the apex of modern open-mindedness.

Ironically, this open-mindedness is driven by self-worship.

  • Our culture's idea of conversion by synthesizing our favorite elements of different religions is aimed at the dual targets of ultimate self-realization and uninhibited self-fulfillment as the highest attainable goods.
  • These are tempting targets at which to aim. But both have a bull's-eye of idolatrous self-worship, because pursuing these goods involves treating ourselves as gods. There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death (Prov 14:12).
