What Change is Needed?

The One-eighty

Biblical conversion is actually the opposite of self-worship.

  • The change that we need is, in fact, a turning away from the idolatry of self-gratification, and a turning to God in true worship. It is a decisive acknowledgement that we are not the final judges of our own lives. It is, in short, to repent of our sins and believe in Jesus Christ.
  • Louis Berkhof speaks of conversion as "a change of thoughts and opinions, of desires and volitions, which involves the conviction that the former direction of life was unwise and wrong and alters the entire course of life" (Systematic Theology, pp481, 483).
  • We most often think of such a change in terms of a major crisis point. But it may also be a gradual change effected and evidenced over time.
  • Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel" (Mark 1:14).
