What is Evangelism?

Evangelism is NOT...

  • The Subjectivity of Personal Testimony
    • Many share their testimony in a way that merely tells others of the benefits that have attended their conversion.  This is not evangelism, and will lead to a typical "good for you" response.
    • Personal testimonies must communicate the claim of the gospel on the lives of the listeners if evangelism is to happen through them.
  • The Surface of Social Action
    • Some people mistake social action or political involvement for evangelism.  But the horizontal problems we face in society are often only symptoms of a breach in our vertical relationship with God.
    • Evangelism that stops with meeting felt needs, helping out at the soup kitchen, or being politically active is not evangelism at all because it fails to clearly communicate the gospel and the need to repent and believe in Jesus Christ.
