Resources for Evangelism

  • Bennett, Michael.  Christianity Explained (Queensland, Australia: Scripture Union, 1985).  CE is a six week evangelistic study through the book of Mark that introduces unbelievers to Jesus' identity, crucifixion, and resurrection.  The last three weeks focus on grace, repentance, and belief.  This is the tool that the pastors of Capitol Hill Baptist Church use and recommend.
  • Jensen, Phillip.  2 Ways to Live (Kingsford, Australia: Matthias Media, 1989).  This is a seven week study that will help you to know the gospel yourself and to share it clearly and naturally with others.  It incorporates praying for unbelieving friends, studying what the Bible says about learning and sharing the gospel, memorizing a brief outline, and gaining some practical experience.
  • Metzger, Will. Tell the Truth (Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity, 1984).
  • Murray, Iain.  Revival and Revivalism (Carlisle, PA: Banner of Truth, 1994).  Reader beware!  Murray will make you work here, but the digging pays off.  The respected historian takes us on a guided tour through the upheavals of revivalistic thinking in the 18th and 19th centuries that persist in shaping the way we think about evangelism even today.
  • Packer, J.I.  Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God (Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity, 1991).  The classic work on one of the most flummoxing tensions in Scripture.  A mere 126 pages of relatively large print, Packer has done us a great service by helping us see through the seeming contradiction into the comforting relationship between the two concepts.
  • Stiles, J. Mack.  Speaking of Jesus (Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity, 1995).
