A Biblical Practice of Growth

How can we promote Biblical growth in accepting new members?

  • Church Covenant
    • If pastors are to legitimately expect spiritual growth in the lives of church members, then certain expectations of behavior that promote spiritual growth need to be communicated clearly at the inception of membership.
    • One of the best ways to communicate healthy expectations of spiritual growth to new members is to use a church covenant. Click here to look at a sample.
    • As you can see, a church covenant commits the individual member to take responsibility not only for his own spiritual growth, but also the growth of all the other members.
    • A church covenant underlines the truth that growth in individual and corporate holiness is not just the pastor's responsibility.  This growth is the responsibility of every single member of the church (Eph 4:12-16).
    • When a new member signs a church covenant, they are not just signing up to be a part of a religious club where they pay their dues and passively enjoy clubhouse privileges.  They are entering into a solemn covenant with every other member of that church, to attend, pray, give, serve, and to proactively promote the health and growth of the other members and of the church as a whole (Heb 10:24-25).
