The Congregational Context of Church Leadership
Common Questions about Congregationalism
A church member's basic attitude needs to be either to trust
the leaders or replace them. But a member should not say that they acknowledge
the elders and then refuse to follow their lead.
By distinguishing these different categories of decisions, we
can keep some questions out of the public arena that would be unnecessarily
divisive if left to the corporate decision of over 200 people. And by cultivating
an attitude of trust in the congregation for the elders, we can keep an unhealthy
spirit of suspicion and doubt from developing among members for their leaders.
The critical relational piece is a trusting relationship between
the congregation and the elders. This trust lubricates the motor of congregationalism.
Without it, there is no moving forward. With it, the sky is the limit.
