The Biblical Nature of Church Leadership

Charismatic Leadership

  • We are heavily indebted in this section to Alexander Strauch's work in Biblical Eldership: an Urgent Call to Restore Biblical Church Leadership (Littleton, CO: Lewis and Roth, 1995).
    • Church leadership is not charismatic in the sense of supernatural phenomena like speaking in tongues.  Rather, it is charismatic in the sense that it is a charisma, a grace gift from God.  It is a spiritual gift that God gives to His church.
    • Paul understands all spiritual gifts as having the common goal of encouraging each other and building up the church (Rom 1:11-12; 1Cor 12:4-7).
    • This means that wherever the church is working by the power of the Spirit for the upbuilding of the body, there the Spirit's gifts are present.
    • Leadership is therefore a God-given grace gift intended to multiply the joy and health of the local church.
